Labour Ward Philosophy: To provide women centred care within the constraints of the service, taking into account each mother and her family. This will include their psychological, physiological, & social needs. The aim is to make the experience of childbirth both a safe and satisfying experience.

Freya Ward (Ante- & post-natal ward)

Freya Ward Philosophy: The ward philosophy is based on a team of happy, healthy, well-motivated midwives, nursing auxiliaries, health care assistants and domestic staff who strive to provide a good ante- & post-natal service for our mothers.
Our aim to ensure that mothers are eventually home confident and happy in the care of their babies.

Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU)

SCBU is situated at the end of Freya ward and comprises of 8 cots.
Infants can be admitted to SCBU if they are over 34 weeks gestation and need low intensity special care. Infants born before 34 weeks or who need intensive care are transferred out to the nearest available neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Packages of Care

Midwife Led Care: The midwife is the lead professional and carries out all antenatal checks at the GP's surgery or at the client's home. This is available to clients with an uneventful medical and obstetric history. If any problems arise at any time during this period the midwife will refer to an obstetrician.

GP Care: GP is the lead professional. Visits at the surgery will alternate between the GP and the midwife. The GP is informed when a client goes into labour and will attend if appropriate.

Shared Care: The obstetrician is the lead professional. This option is most suitable for clients who have a history of medical or obstetric problems which require consultant input but which do not necessarily need his/her constant surveillance. Antenatal visits will be shared between the consultant at antenatal clinic, the GP and the midwife.

Consultant Care: The obstetrician is the lead professional. This option is for clients who have a history of significant medical or obstetric problems which need close surveillance by the consultant. Most care will be carried out at the hospital's antenatal clinic.

Home Birth

A home birth can be planned following discussion between a client, her family and her midwife.

Domino delivery

Domino deliveries are available but with the onset of midwife led care and short postnatal stays in hospital this is becoming an outdated concept of care.
