The Wrekin Maternity Unit is a low-risk community Midwife-led unit. The Consultant Unit is at Shrewsbury. Hospital policies and protocols are in place for all aspects of care. We have tours of the unit every Saturday afternoon at 2.30pm [no need to book].
Classes
- Antenatal Classes are run every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday evening commencing at 7.30 pm in the Antenatal Clinic. The Maternity Unit midwives run the courses and topics include labour, pain relief, alternatives to normal labour, feeding and the new arrival.
- Breastfeeding classes are held every Friday afternoon at Oakengates the classes are run by midwives, health visitors and local breastfeeding mother's.
- Aquanatal classes are held at Madeley Court Pool every Wednesday evening for mothers who are 28 weeks +.
- There is an early Pregnancy Session every Sunday afternoon at 2 pm for newly pregnant women and their partners.
- The physio holds relaxation classes every Wednesday from 1.30pm.
Facilities
- We have disabled facilities including an en-suite single room. The room is large enough to accommodate the main carer.
- An interpreting service is available.
- We have a birthing pool and unit midwives are proficient in its use. There is no charge for this service.
- Epidurals are not available at Wrekin.
- Bathroom facilities are available in all labour rooms.
- Postnatal bathrooms are 6 bath/shower rooms for 14 bedded ward.
- Secure unit intercom in place.
Visiting
- Postnatal visiting times are: 10am - 12 noon, partners/own children only or one other. 3pm - 5pm and 7pm - 8.30 pm. Children other than own children must be over 14 years old.
- Bus service to hospital and train service to Wellington then bus to Hospital. There is plenty of car parking in the main Hospital Car Park.
